Respect Life Latin Mass this Saturday 8am: St. Ann will host its regular 4^th Saturday Respect Life Mass (Latin) at 9am this Saturday July 27. Afterwards Fr. Reid will lead attendees in a Rosary at the Planned Parenthood facility (700 S. Torrence Drive, Charlotte).  People can also pray in the church a Holy Hour of Reparation for the end of abortion (with Eucharistic Adoration).

Great article on traditional Catholic rural life: The Catholic News Herald had an excellent front page story on St. Joseph’s farm in Columbus, NC (2 hours west of Charlotte), which is run by Jason Craig and his family. N.B. – Space does not permit a full explanation, but there is a strong link between the Traditional Latin Mass and rural life/agriculture: from the Ember Days, to the Rogation Days, as well as a the ancient Roman Ritual’s various blessings including St. Peter of Verona palms, herbs, seeds, livestock, bees, sick crops, etc.  There is much that can be said – perhaps for a future time. In the interim, this link has some good books that go into the traditions and customs of Catholic rural life.

Fr. Lawrence Carney’s book, Walking the Road to God: Switching now to the sanctification of urban areas, we wanted to share with you a link to Fr. Carney’s book, as referenced in Father B’s sermon on Sunday. Fr. Carney actually gave a women’s retreat here a year or so ago. As Father noted on Sunday, the book really highlights the evangelistic effect of seeing a priest in cassock walking around town. Latin Mass update:

Mass cancellations this week: The 6pm Latin Mass Wednesday and 7am Latin Mass Friday at St. Ann are both canceled while Fr. Reid is away.

No Liturgy & Fraternity in July: Since the Wednesday Latin Mass at St. Ann is canceled, the normal Liturgy & Fraternity for this week is also canceled.

Introduction to the Latin Mass at St. John Neumann parish in Charlotte this Sunday, July 21 at 12 noon: Seminarian Matthew Dimock will provide an overview of the history and ritual of the “Mass that formed the Saints.” Refreshments will be served.

New Sunday Traditional Latin Mass begins in Tryon:

We are pleased to report that St. John the Baptist in Tryon (2 hours west of Charlotte, or 1.25 hours from Gastonia) will now begin offering an 8:30am Sunday High Mass beginning Sunday August 4. This is a welcome news for the community out in the mountains which currently lacks a Sunday Latin Mass. Please keep Fr. Christian in your prayers as he begins to offer this Mass weekly.

Support Carmelite Hermits

Lastly, since today is the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, we wanted to share an opportunity to support a traditional Carmelite community called the Hermits of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Some of you may recall meeting the Hermits in 2017.  They are a new group of Carmelite hermits based in Fairfield, PA.   Please offer a prayer for the Hermits on their feast day. Laudetur Iesu Christus! In addition to the normal Sunday 12:30pm Latin Mass at St. Ann tomorrow, there is also a 1^st Sunday 4pm Latin Mass at Sacred Heart in Salisbury (Fr. Barone’s last Mass before his new assignment). See details below from the Salisbury Latin Mass Community.

Tomorrow also marks the 12th anniversary of Summorum Pontificum, which provided greater access to the Latin Mass to the Catholic faithful. Please offer some prayers in thanksgiving for this wonderful document, which has helped to spread Latin Masses in certain parts of our diocese.

July 4^th weekend schedule changes: The only cancellation we are aware of is the Thursday July 4^th  8:15am Latin Mass at St. Michael in Gastonia due to the holiday (according to the bulletin). All other daily Latin Masses in the area are still scheduled as normal (check bulletins just in case).

This Friday is the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a 1st class feast day.  Fr. Reid has graciously agreed to permit an additional evening Latin Mass at 7pm (in addition to the 7am Low Mass).  The evening Mass will be offered by Fr. Barone.  Please offer prayers for both priests in thanksgiving for this extra opportunity for Mass.

Although the Sacred Heart is an ancient devotion,  Our Lord appeared more “recently” to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1690 who asked her to make this devotion public throughout the Church, whereby the faithful can offer reparation for the insults against His Sacred Heart made by ungrateful men, while come to love Him more deeply through the devotion to His Sacred Heart. 2. Traditional men’s retreat by the Carmelite Hermits: Our friends, the Traditional Eremitical Carmelites of Fairfield, PA (called Hermits of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel) are sponsoring two men’s retreats later this summer. They are both out of state, but worth a look. The first one will be in Boston, MA on Aug. 22 – 25. The second retreat will be in Denver, CO from September 5-8. Please see attached flyer.

Tuesday June 11 (Veneration of Padre Pio’s relics  & 5:30pm Latin Mass): This Tuesday June 11, Padre Pio’s relics will be available for veneration at the Cathedral from 9am – 8pm. Saturday June 15 (9am Respect Life Latin Mass): The June St. Ann Respect Life Mass will be a Latin Mass on Ember Saturday June 15. After Mass, a Holy Hour of Reparation (led by a deacon or seminarian) will be offered. Coffee and donuts served after the Holy Hour. This is an excellent way to do penance for the sin of abortion and impurity on the (now voluntary) penitential day of Ember Saturday.

Ember Days: As noted above, this coming week is the Whit Embertide, or the summer Ember Days, where in the traditional calendar, the Church sets aside 3 days each season (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday after Pentecost) as a day of prayer and fasting (now voluntary) to thank God for His creation, and to ask for graces for the upcoming season. 1. 1^st Sunday Latin Mass at Sacred Heart parish Salisbury 4pm: We’ve been forgetful in posting these, but the Salisbury Latin Mass Community continues to organize a 1^st Sunday Latin Mass at Sacred Heart each 1^st Sunday at 4pm. This Sunday’s celebrant is Fr. Barone and it will be a High Mass. After Mass there will be a reception in Bransfield Hall. Please bring a favorite hors d’oeuvres or snack to share with others.  Fr. Barone has graciously agreed to attend the social and be available to answer any questions you may have related to the Latin Mass.

2. Special play/presentation on the life of Venerable Augustus Tolton – next Friday & Saturday: Next weekend, St. Luke Productions, a Catholic theater group will be presenting a play on the life of Ven. Augustus Tolton. We understand the play show Ven. Tolton and his mentor, Fr. McGirr celebrating the Latin Mass (fictionally of course). The play will be on Friday June 7 (7:30pm) and Saturday June 8 (3pm and 7:30pm) at The Great Aunt Stella Center, 926 Elizabeth Ave, Charlotte ($10 adults/$5 children). For those readers in Greensboro, the play will be up there on June 10/11 (see article below). See article below for more details.

If you’re not familiar with him, Ven. Tolton was a former slave and the first black priest ordained to the priesthood in the U.S. He died in Chicago at age 43 in 1897. Like all priests of his day, he offered the Traditional Latin Mass his entire priesthood and help establish several parishes in Illinois. His postulator for the cause of his canonization is none other than Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, Joseph Perry, who is a friend to the Latin Mass faithful and offers the Traditional Latin Mass frequently across the U.S.

It concluded with a special blessing over the fields. Latin Mass & 40 Hours devotion – this week there will be 2 opportunities (back to back) to attend a Solemn High Mass, and to participate in the 40 Hours devotion:

Ascension Thursday May 30: 7pm, Annual Solemn High Orchestral Mass at St. Ann with the Carolina Catholic Chorale and orchestra. Along with the chants, sacred music will be the beautiful MASS in G of Franz Schubert.  Immediately after Mass, St. Ann will begin its annual 40 Hours devotion of Eucharistic Adoration ending 3pm Saturday June 1. The signup sheet is in the narthex.

Friday May 31 – Feast of the Queenship of Mary: 7pm Solemn High Mass, Cathedral of St. Patrick. For the music settings, it will be Mass for Four Voices by 16^th century composer Michelangelo Grancini; motets by Palestrina and Anerio as well as the usual proper chants.

The Cathedral is also organizing a special 40 Hours devotion surrounding this Mass (1pm May 30 – ends 8am June 1), to pray to prevent the opening of the new Planned Parenthood abortion facility nearby. Sign up: https://stpatricks.org/forty-hours
