Lenten Embertide update

Laudetur Iesus Christus! As we enter the full first week of Lent, it also is Ember Week and we have a few news items to share.

We’re now on Social Media

In an effort to promote the Latin Mass in Charlotte to a wider audience, the CLMC has established a social media presence.

Facebook account is: https://www.facebook.com/CharlotteLatinMassCommunity

Twitter account is: http://www.twitter.com/CLMCLatinMass

At both places, we’ll share events, news, photos, and periodic Latin Mass related articles.  Please add or like these sites if you’re on social media.  If you don’t have a Facebook or Twitter account, you can still review the content in a limited way. This will be in addition to our normal e-mail and website updates.

Lenten Ember Days

This week is the Lenten Ember days, when in the traditional Roman Rite calendar, the Church sets aside 3 days each season (Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday) to offer penance and reparation and to beseech God for spiritual progress in the season ahead. Though it’s only commemorated in the traditional 1962 calendar, this tradition continues to grow among many Latin Mass Communities. With all the problems in the Church today, it may be a good idea to offer this week’s penance (now only optional) for reparations for the sins of the Church and her hierarchy. As custom, for more information on the Ember Days, please visit Fisheaters.com:

Ash Wednesday update

Laudetur Iesus Christus! As we prepare to enter the holy season of Lent, we have just a few updates to share:

Ash Wednesday: The only Latin Mass on Ash Wednesday will be 7am at St. Ann (offered by priests of the Seminary). The 6pm Mass (St. Ann) and 7pm (St. Thomas) will not be Latin Masses.

Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas: This Thursday March 7 is the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas and we have to important Latin Masses to share:

  • Thomas Aquinas parish (Charlotte) – 7pm Solemn High Latin Mass along with a veneration/blessing with a 1st class relic of St. Thomas Aquinas
  • John the Baptist parish (Tryon, NC – 2 hours west of Charlotte) – 6:30pm High Mass

Feast of the Annunciation – Monday March 25: St. Mark parish in Huntersville will offer a Solemn High Mass at 7pm (with a special instruction class at 6:30pm) to commemorate this glorious feast day.

Septuagesima update & Annual Latin Mass Novena

Ash Wednesday Update (March 6, 2019): The only Ash Wednesday Latin Mass will be 7am at St. Ann parish (the evening Masses at St. Ann and St. Thomas Aquinas will be Ordinary Form).

—–

Laudetur Iesus Christus!  We are now 2 weeks into the mini-lent season of Septuagesima, which as Fr. Reid noted a few weeks ago, helps us to prepare for Lent which begins next week. Here are some updates we have to share:

  • Wednesday February 27 – feast of St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows: This feast day normally is normally suppressed during Lent, but with Lent occurring later this year we get to commemorate St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother. St. Gabriel was an obscure saint born in 1838 in Assisi, Italy. He joined the Passionists, and lived a joyful life according to their rule, but died at age 23 from Tuberculosis. He is the patron of youth and the Abruzzo region of Italy (Source: FSSP Newsletter, February 2019). Latin Masses on this day are 7am (St. Ann), 6pm (St. Ann) and 7pm St. Thomas (Solemn High).

  • Annual Rosary Novena to our patron, St. Gregory begins this Sunday March 3: Each year we pray a Rosary novena to the CLMC’s patron saint, St. Gregory the Great (he reformed the Roman Liturgy, i.e. the Latin Mass, and the chant that bears his name). The novena begins this Sunday March 3rd which is the 6th anniversary (2013) of our Sunday Latin Mass at St. Ann and concludes Monday March 11, the “vigil” of the Feast of St. Gregory.

The novena is simple – pray a Rosary, then add the attached prayers to St. Gregory afterwards (we’ll also have novena cards at 12:30 pm Sunday Mass). Like the last 3 years we again pray for these ongoing intentions:

    • Full sacramental/parish life in the Extraordinary Form for Charlotte (includes daily Masses & confessions, Confirmation, Triduum, traditional catechesis, devotions, etc.)
    • Sanctity of our Latin Mass Priests and Bishop Jugis
    • That Our Lord may send more Latin Mass priests and traditional vocations to Charlotte

Would you join us in praying the novena?

====================

Rosary Novena Prayer to St. Gregory the Great

  1. Pray a Rosary each day beginning March 3 and ending March 11.
  2. At the end of each Rosary, add this prayer:

St. Gregory, you are known for your zeal for the Catholic faith, love of liturgy, and compassion and mercy toward those in need.  Please help and guide us so that we may share in these virtues and thereby bring Jesus into the hearts of our families and all we encounter.  We especially ask for blessings on our parish family, our priests and our deacons.

I also ask that you graciously intercede for me before God so that I might be granted the special assistance and graces that I seek (full sacramental and parochial life in the Extraordinary Form for the Charlotte faithful and that Our Lord will send more Latin Mass priests to our diocese).

Help me to live as a faithful child of God and to attain the eternal happiness of heaven.

St. Gregory the Great pray for us.   Amen

Mid-February update

Laudetur Iesus Christus! We have two updates to share with you this week:

St. Ann’s 6pm Wednesday Mass change for tomorrow: The Wednesday 6pm Mass for tomorrow (Feb. 13) will be Novus Ordo due to the parish mission.  There will still be a 7am Latin Mass at St. Ann Wednesday morning (offered by the Seminary priests).  Also St. Thomas Aquinas offers a 7pm Latin Mass on Wednesday evening.

Bishop Athanasius Schneider’s remarks on non-Christian religions:  We also have a wonderful update from our friend, Bishop Athanasius Schneider, Auxiliary Bishop of St. Mary of Astana Kazakhstan,  whom many of you fondly remember visited us at St. Ann in 2017 (https://charlottelatinmass.org/resources/latin-mass-classes/bishopschneider/).

Last week, His Excellency wrote excellent essay entitled The Gift of Filial Adoption: Christian Faith only Valid and God-willed Religion. We encourage everyone to read it as it helps to clarify the Church’s traditional teachings on Christianity vs. other religions:

https://onepeterfive.com/schneider-christian-god-willed/

Please keep Bishop Schneider and all Bishops in your prayers, that they will boldly proclaim Christ and His doctrines.

Candlemas update

Laudetur Iesus Christus! We thank everyone for attending our annual “close of Christmas” celebration this past Sunday and extend our thanks to the Cantate Domino Latin Choir for their beautiful singing during Mass, and afterwards.

Candlemas this Saturday (February 2nd) … Also First Saturday!:
This Saturday is not only Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Candlemas), it is also a First Saturday.  Following the traditional Liturgical Ordo, Candlemas marks the fortieth day after Christmas and the end of the extended Christmas season.  There are three Latin Masses in the greater Charlotte area of which we are aware.

Following tradition, these parishes will be blessing candles prior to Mass and additionally may have processions incorporated into the liturgy.  Parishioners are invited to bring their own candles in from home to be blessed.  Please take note of the time of the candle blessing, and be sure to have your candles in the appropriate place before the blessing begins.

St. Ann, Charlotte, NC:  Low Mass: 9:00 am (Candle Blessing at 9:00 am)
St. Thomas Aquinas, Charlotte, NC:  Solemn High Mass: 10:00 am (Candle Blessing at 9:30 am)
St. John the Baptist, Tryon, NC:  High Mass: 8:30 am (Not sure if there will be a candles blessing … bring candles just in case)

1st Sunday Latin Mass in Salisbury

Sacred Heart in Salisbury will offer its monthly Sunday Latin Mass at 4pm. Fr. Brian Becker will offer Mass, and afterwards in the school library there will be a reception and talk with Flora Lester (parish music director) on the liturgical music of the Mass. Please bring your favorite hors d’oeuvres or snack to share.

Late January update

Laudetur Iesus Christus! As we progress through Epiphanytide, below are some updates for Masses:

Respect Life Latin Mass this Saturday 9am January 26
St. Ann will offer a 9am Low Mass for the 4th Saturday Respect Life Mass. After Mass will be a Holy Hour of Reparation in the church, or you can go with St. Ann’s Respect Life Ministry to pray at the local abortion facility on Hebron Road.

3rd annual Wassailing celebration this Sunday January 27
At the 12:30 PM Latin Mass at St. Ann parish this Sunday, we will be joined by the Cantate Domino Latin Choir who will singing at the Mass.  Afterwards, we will have a celebration out in the plaza and the CDLC will lead us in our annual singing of the Wassail (ancient carol).  We will also be serving hot apple cider and some cookies. Please consider bringing a plate of cookies to share. (N.B. this year we’re holding the celebration a few weeks early).

Candlemas – Saturday February 2nd
Saturday February 2nd is the Feast of the Purification, or otherwise known as the Feast of the Candles (Candlemas). It commemorates Mary’s obedience to the Mosaic law by submitting herself to the Temple for the ritual purification, as commanded in Leviticus.  The tradition was for Catholics to bring all their candles for the year in to be blessed on this feast day. Here are the Masses thus far:

  • St. Ann: A Latin Mass will be offered at 9 AM.
  • St. John the Baptist parish in Tryon, NC (2 hours west of Charlotte): A High Mass (Latin) will be offered at 8:30 AM.

Lastly, if you haven’t ordered Candles and would like to, Chris recommended this site: http://www.luxcandlecompany.com/

New Saturday Latin High Mass in Tryon
Additionally, from February 2nd onward, Fr. Christian will be offering a High Mass each Saturday at 8:30am at St. John the Baptist parish in Tryon, NC.

No 7am Latin Mass this Friday at St. Ann (Jan. 18)

Laudetur Iesus Christus! Just a heads up that due to the March for Life in Washington DC, the 7am Friday Latin Mass this Friday January 18 at St. Ann is canceled.

As routine, there will still be a 12:30 PM Low Mass at St. Mark parish in Huntersville on Friday.

Please consider offering your rosary intentions that day (or next Tuesday – the actual anniversary) for the end of the terrible scourge of abortion.
