Late October Update

Dear Friends of the Charlotte Latin Mass Community,

Laudetur Iesus Christus!

We have 3 events to share with you:

  1. This Saturday, October 24th at 10am. Solemn High Mass for the relics of St. Maria Goretti at St. Thomas Aquinas parish. A once in a life time event here in our diocese will surely bring incredible graces upon our community. If you attend, its recommended you arrive early, and visit St. Thomas’ website for the latest on parking arrangements (they have offsite parking due to the enormous crowds).

The Mass will be a Votive to St. Maria Goretti and will be celebrated in the presence of her major relics.  To be clear, the major relics are her full skeletal remains inside a glass-sided casket. The wax statue of her in repose contains her skeletal remains which are not visible. Her body is not incorrupt. But her skeleton is complete except for some small amounts of bone that went into reliquaries and her right arm that her mother Assunta donated to the Church of St. Nicholas, known as the Sanctuary of St. Maria Goretti, in her birth town of Corinaldo.  Maria used her right arm to defend her purity in the attack.

How fitting that her whole skeletal remains will be coming to Charlotte with the exception of her right arm … the same arm that she used to defend her purity.  Her right arm will remain at her home parish near Rome, a short distance from where the Synod is taking place.  Just as she repelled an attack in defense of her purity, we can ask her to come to the aid of Holy Mother Church to repel those who are attacking the purity of the Church and her Sacraments.

  1. 40 Days for Life Saturday October 31 from 10-11am: The Charlotte Latin Mass Community is sponsoring an hour vigil in front of the Latrobe abortion mill (3220 Latrobe Drive, Charlotte) to peacefully pray for an end to abortion. This is part of the 40 days for Life campaign and we invite all CLMC members and friends to join us in praying for the unborn and their mothers. Please consider committing to this hour.

  1. All Souls Requiem Mass, Monday November 2nd, 7pm: St. Ann’s will host a Missa Cantata Requiem Mass for the Feast of All Souls.  Please mark your calendars.

October update

Dear Friends of the Charlotte Latin Mass Community,
Laudetur Iesus Christus!

In 1883, Pope Leo XIII officially dedicated the month of October to the Holy Rosary.  Throughout the Church’s history, Our Lady of the Rosary is credited with numerous military victories.  One of the more famous of these battles is the Battle of Lepanto which took place on October 7th in the year 1571.  Prior to this battle, the Catholic fleet under the command of John of Austria, joined together in praying the Holy Rosary in petition for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin in defeating the evil muslim hords.  As a result, the Muslim (Ottoman) fleet was defeated which stopped their northern and western invasions.  In honor of the victory, Pope Pius V instituted the Feast of Our Lady of Victory, which the Church celebrates this coming Wednesday as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7).

In fact many of the feast days that the Church celebrates near the end of the Liturgical Year, are linked to battles between Catholicism and Islam.  Theological scholars have noted that the Church seems to be drawing our thoughts to the end times, when the Catholic Church will undergo trials and tribulations before the return of Christ the King, which is a feast that the Church celebrates on October 25th.

“And out of his mouth proceedeth a sharp two-edged sword, that with it he may strike the nations. And he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath of God the Almighty. And he hath on his garment and on his thigh written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”  Apocalypse 19:15-16.
With this in mind I would like to draw your attention to two events.  The first is the Synod on the Family that started today in Rome; and the second is that the major relics (full skeletal remains) of St. Maria Goretti will be on display at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Charlotte on Oct 24th and 25th which providentially is also the closing day of the Synod on the Family in Rome.

Regarding the first event, there are those who will be present at the synod who have made public comments about their desire to change Church’s doctrine regarding the Sacraments of Matrimony and the Eucharist — in contradiction to the words of Christ himself while he walked on this earth with his own two feet.  They desire to publicly welcome people in adulterous affairs and gravely disordered sexual relationships to receive Holy Communion without repentance.  Although it is not our place to be at the Synod, to speak out in defense of the Church and her teachings, it is always our role, and duty, to pray for the Church and her leaders.

Regarding the second event, St. Maria Goretti is the patron saint of purity, and the age of twelve she raised up her right arm to resist an attack on her purity and was martyred for it.  In a similar way the Church is in desperate need to be defended against an attack on her purity.

For this reason, I would ask you to join me along with many other Catholics around the world who are praying a Rosary Novena starting on October 7th, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.  Starting on this date and continuing each day through October 15th, there will be a novena of rosaries, one each day, to pray for those present at the synod, asking Our Lady of the Rosary to intercede to the Holy Spirit for them– to embolden those who stand in defense of God and His Laws, and to convert those who do not.

We here in Charlotte will have the added benefit of joining St. Maria Goretti to our petition. May God reward you for your prayers.

Attached below are some noteworthy updates for the Month of October:

1.  This week there is a priests retreat in the Diocese of Charlotte, and at St. Ann’s there will be no Masses on Monday-Friday this week.  This may result in cancellations in other parishes as well.  Please consult your local bulletins.

2.  Thursday, Oct 22nd: MiraVia Annual Fundraising Banquet (Register Here).  This is a great event each year with great nationally known pro-life speakers.  Registrations are free but REQUIRED.  Please keep in mind that this is a fundraiser, and there will be a money pitch at the of the event.  Please come and support this great organization.

3. Saturday, Oct 24th:  There will be a Solemn High Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas in Charlotte on Saturday Oct 24th at 10:00am.

4. Sunday, Oct 25th:  Feast of Christ the King: Missa Cantata, St. Ann Catholic Church in Charlotte; 12:30pm.

5. Sunday, Nov 1st:  Feast of All Saints: Missa Cantata, St. Ann Catholic Church in Charlotte; 12:30pm.
6. Monday, Nov 2nd: Feast of All Souls: There are three noteworthy updates for this Feast Day:
— Please note that you are able to earn one plenary indulgence for the dead each day of November 1st-8th when you make a visit to a cemetery to pray for the deceased, and when the usual requirements for an indulgence (Confession, Communion, prayers for the Holy Father’s intentions and detachment from sin) are met. Help those suffering souls who can no longer help themselves and they will bless you with their prayers for you when they enter Heaven.
— Please note that there was originally a Solemn Requiem Mass scheduled at St. Marks Catholic Church in Huntersville, however, this was cancelled.
     — At 7:00pm, there will be a High Requiem Mass for All Souls at St. Ann in Charlotte.
Please pray for the continued growth of the Charlotte Latin Mass Community and for the establishment of full traditional sacramental parish life here in Charlotte.
Here is a link to the MiraVia Fundraising Banquet Registration Page.

Registration is free but REQUIRED.  Registration deadline is October 10th.

September update.

Laudetur Iesus Christus! As we enter Ember Week, we just have two events to pass along:

First, Saturday is St. Ann’s annual carnival. Please stop by to enjoy the festivities.

Second, we, the Charlotte Latin Mass Community are grateful to St. Ann’s, its pastor, and its parishioners for their support of the Latin Mass over the last few years. In a way to say thank you, we will be serving coffee and donuts after 8AM English Mass Sunday, from 9-10am (the largest block of free time on Sunday). Since there is no regular Sunday fellowship after the Masses, we thought this might be a good idea once in a while.

Several of us will be there at 8:30am to set up in the plaza underneath the smaller tents (rain or shine). While it may be a small sacrifice to arrive a few hours early, please consider dropping by sometime between 8:30 – 10 to help serve and to meet your fellow parishioners – something we don’t always have the opportunity to do after our later Mass. And to not confuse anyone, our normal Mass will still be at 12:30pm Sunday.

Mid August Update

Laudetur Iesus Christus! We have several items to share with you this month:

  1. Important Latin Mass schedule change at Sacred Heart in Salisbury. Beginning in September, the Sunday 4pm Latin Mass will now only be offered monthly. The upcoming Latin Mass dates are: September 13 and October 18. For all other weeks that do not have a Latin Mass scheduled, there will not be any 4pm Sunday Mass. Please check the Sacred Heart bulletin or parish office for the most accurate information on Mass schedules.

  1. Latin Classes being offered at St. Michael’s in Gastonia. Mr. John Welsh, a teacher at St. Michael’s school will be offering classes in the Basics of Ecclesiastical Latin. Latin Classes offered at St. Michael’s

Below is information on learning Latin classes Mr. John Welsh is offering at St. Michael’s in Gastonia.  Classes will be held in the Church hall.

==============

Here are the details for Basics of Ecclesiastical Latin, the class that’s less intensive and intended for a wide parish audience:

This class meets once a week for 90 minutes, every Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:00 AM. Class will meet in the Church Hall, which is the small building right behind the Old Church. The class is designed to run essentially for a whole school year, and is broken up into two parts, or semesters.
  • The first semester will begin on Wednesday 26 August and conclude on Wednesday 16 December; there will be no class November 25 (Thanksgiving).
  • The second semester will begin on Wednesday 20 January 2016 and conclude on Wednesday 18 May; there will be no class March 23 (Holy Week) or March 30 (Easter Week).
The textbook for the class will be Latina Christiana I by Cheryl Lowe, ISBN: 193095302X; ISBN-13 978-1930953024. It is widely available online, and retails at Amazon for $12.00. Other materials needed for this class are of the usual kind: a binder with pockets and looseleaf paper for taking notes, doing classwork, and keeping handouts; 3×5 index cards for making flashcards; and lots of pens, pencils and erasers.
The fee for this class will be $200 per student for the whole year, August through May, besides the textbook and class materials. The $200 may be paid all at once at the start, or may be split into two halves due at the beginning of each semester. Some payment is expected by the September 2 class meeting.

Thank you for your interest! I look forward to seeing many of you on August 26th.

If you have additional concerns or if I have accidentally left out other important information, please feel free to let me know.

Feast of the Assumption – Solemn High Mass

St. Ann will host a Solemn High Mass for the Feast of the Assumption on Saturday August 15th at Noon with our Bishop Peter Jugis in choir (present in the Sanctuary).

The parish will also celebrate its 60th anniversary of the founding of the parish and host a reception afterwards. Please consider signing up to help with the reception – a great way to give back to the parish that gave us a Sunday Latin Mass!

Veterum Sapientia Conference

Dear Friends of the Charlotte Latin Mass Community,

Laudetur Iesus Christus!  Our dear friend Father Jason Barone of the Diocese of Charlotte is organizing the 3rd Annual Veterum Sapientia Conference on August 2-8, 2015.  While this year it is being held in Washington DC due to a scheduling conflict with the venue locally here in Charlotte, the goal is to return the conference to Charlotte going forward in future years.

Feast of the Natvity of St. John the Baptist

This coming Wednesday, June 24th is the Feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist (1st Class Feast). We are honored at St. Ann Catholic Church in Charlotte that Father Jason Barone will be visiting us to commemorate this feast with a Solemn High Mass at 6:00 pm. Please join us if you are able.

To demonstrate the honor that the Church bestows on St. John the Baptist, this feast is one of only three birthdays in the Roman Liturgical Year — the other two being those of Jesus Christ (December 25th) and the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8th).
