History of the Feast of St. Michael

This feast day, a 1st class feast, was established in the 5th century after St. Michael appeared at a cave near Gargano (Apulia), Italy (Monte Sant’ Angelo). Later after another apparition, a Church was built in the cave and dedicated to St. Michael, hence the formal name of the feast day. One of the neat things about this apparition is that St. Michael sanctified the cave to God, and the actual rock of the cave became a “relic” of St. Michael which fragments are made available to the faithful for veneration.

St. Michael and the Latin Mass

Lastly, we should not forget that invoking St. Michael’s intercession is part of the custom of the Traditional Latin Mass.  After each Low Mass, we conclude the Leonine prayers with the St. Michael prayer, which Pope Leo XIII composed in 1884 after his terrible vision of Satan attacking the Church and requested it be prayed after each Low Mass.  Pius XII later asked these prayers be prayed for the conversion of Russia, as requested by Our Lady of Fatima.

Sáncte Míchael Archángele, defénde nos in proélio, cóntra nequítiam et insídias diáboli ésto præsídium. Ímperet ílli Déus, súpplices deprecámur: tuque, prínceps milítiæ cæléstis, Sátanam aliósque spíritus malígnos, qui ad perditiónem animárum pervagántur in múndo, divína virtúte, in inférnum detrúde. Ámen.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.  Be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
